A more sensitive search for νμ→ντ oscillations in NOMAD
1999
With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for $\numunutau$ oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify $\nutau$ charged current interactions followed by decay of the $\tau^-$ to one of several decay modes. Our ``blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90\% C.L. confidence region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane. At large $\Del…
A non-homogeneous Poisson based model for daily rainfall data
2007
In this paper we report some results of the application of a new stochastic model applied to rainfall daily data. The Poisson models, characterized only by the expected rate of events (impulse occurrences, that is the mean number of impulses per unit time) and the assigned probability distribution of the phenomenon magnitude, do not take into consideration the datum regarding the duration of the occurrences, that is fundamental from a hydrological point of view. In order to describe the phenomenon in a way more adherent to its physical nature, we propose a new model simple and manageable. This model takes into account another random variable, representing the duration of the rainfall due to…
Computation of the Multivariate Oja Median
2003
The multivariate Oja median (Oja, 1983) is an affine equivariant multivariate location estimate with high efficiency. This estimate has a bounded influence function but zero breakdown. The computation of the estimate appears to be highly intensive. We consider different, exact and stochastic, algorithms for the calculation of the value of the estimate. In the stochastic algorithms, the gradient of the objective function, the rank function, is estimated by sampling observation. hyperplanes. The estimated rank function with its estimated accuracy then yields a confidence region for the true sample Oja median, and the confidence region shrinks to the sample median with the increasing number of…
Noise-induced behavioral change driven by transient chaos
2022
We study behavioral change in the context of a stochastic, non-linear consumption model with preference adjusting, interdependent agents. Changes in long-run consumption behavior are modelled as noise induced transitions between coexisting attractors. A particular case of multistability is considered: two fixed points, whose immediate basins have smooth boundaries, coexist with a periodic attractor, with a fractal immediate basin boundary. If a trajectory leaves an immediate basin, it enters a set of complexly intertwined basins for which final state uncertainty prevails. The standard approach to predicting transition events rooted in the stochastic sensitivity function technique due to Mil…
